I often get asked the difference between NLB based services (Web Services, Remoting, WCF) and Digipede

Digipede

• not limited by NLB - load balancing on real time CPU load
• not limited by different computer hardware -can run on 1 CPU PC AND 32 way-servers
• uses both server AND client (XP, Vista)
• Publish & Subscribe architecture doesn' overload server
• Digipede can run in background, on idle or when user is logged off
• Incredible scalability up to 1000 servers

• limited to NLB - based on connection load balancing thus not "tuned" for CPU workloads
• needs (almost) identical server hardware
• exclusively server based
• suffer from peak workloads
• difficult to control workflow on single computer (Round Robin)
• limited scalability in one cluster (32 way)

Should Microsoft buy Digipede? After spending a while with my company Decatec distributing the .NET grid computing software, I believe that would be a fantastic fit, bringing huge benefits to customers being able to run all sorts of software on a grid made up of tens or gundreds of servers or PCs, Digipede could become a new .NET/WinFX/Longhorn pillar (perhaps with the name WGF- Windows Grid Foundation).

Then imagine how WF, Exchange or Dynamics could scale out their middle tier in a SaaSy way, virtually without limits.

Talking to an academic astrophysician the other day I was reminded the power of SETI and the related @HOME grids, the internet grid systems which utilize inderused computer power donated by users. Well, Digipede does exactly the same , just within the company borders (LAN): it can reuse the power of PCs while users are logged OFF (night or even lunch break) , but also while users are logged IN Digipede can run as a background service.

and what if MS bought Digipede? I do hope they do!! I've used similar .NET grid computing software before in a financial services environment which could easily saturate 400-500 CPUs of parallel work on 4-5 different OSs and CPU types.

Recently I've come across several BizTalk projects using custom pipelines to receive, uncompress and parse all sorts of legacy formats and to create billing statements as PDF. I believe such custom pipelines to be ideal for grid computing to offload serious CPU work to other boxes and to keep it all super scalable.
